EDMONTON - The UVic Vikes track team captured five of a possible six medals up for grabs in the men's and women's 1500-metre race as the Canada West Championships concluded on Saturday.

The men's team owned the podium on Saturday, winning gold, silver and bronze in the 1500m race. #Daniel Mallie#, a fifth-year senior from Delta, BC, won the race with a time of 3:55.39. Rookie #Karl Robertson# took silver in 3:57.86, and #Cliff Childs# captured bronze in 3:58.65.
In the women's 1500m, #Julia Tschanz# and #Claire Jean# battled it out for the top prize with Tschanz winning by a tenth of a second. Tschanz, a Belmont Sec. graduate, posted a winning time of 4:37.05. Jean, a Claremont Sec. graduate, took silver in 4:37.14.
Overall, the Vikes won 10 medals at the Canada West championships. Despite only competing in the middle distance events, the men's team placed sixth in the team standings and the women also placed sixth. Regina won the men's conference banner, and Saskatchewan the women's title.
#Darren Mazzei# was also awarded the Canada West student-athlete award, which recognizes outstanding athletic, academic and community achievements. Mazzei won the 1000m on Friday and is an Academic all-Canadian.
Next up for the Vikes is the CIS Championships, which take place in Windsor from March 11-13.
