VICTORIA - A second quarter scoring spree propelled the UVic Vikes men's basketball team to a 74-66 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears.

The Vikes offence erupted for 30 points in the second quarter, nearly doubling their output from the first stanza, and took a 46-28 lead into halftime. #Cyril Indome# netted eight points during the decisive stretch and finished with 19 to lead all scorers.
"It was jut another good battle, we played hard we knew our defensive assignments," said Indome, a native of Winnipeg. "We came out with a little bit of an edge and came out more aggressive."
The Vikes also received a big boost on the 'boards and owned a 38-30 advantage on the glass. Forwards #Mike Berg# and #Wendell Thomas# had 10 rebounds apiece, and both players completed the double-doubles with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
#Ryan MacKinnon# rounded out the Vikes scoring leaders as the third-year guard from Comox contributed 14 points after knocking down three from behind the arc. The Vikes collective made eight three-pointers and shot 45 percent overall.
It was the first loss during conference play for Alberta, who entered the game toting a 4-0 record under first year head coach Greg Francis. The Golden Bears also owned a 79-63 decision over the Vikes in the pre-season.
The leading scorer for Alberta was rookie guard Jordan Baker, who netted 14 points on 6-10 shooting. Sahr Saffa came off the bench to provide 12 points, and Jamaal Bucknor shot 5-9 for 11 points. The Golden Bears shot 45 percent, which included 10 three-pointers.
Both sides combined for only 11 trips to the free-throw line.
The Vikes will host their final home game of 2009 on Saturday night. McKinnon Gym welcomes the Canada West's leading scorer Showron Glover and the Saskatchewan Huskies for a 7 p.m. tip-off. UVic ends the first half of the season with four road games.
