SURREY - A lone Surrey Lions goal in the eighth minute took them past the UVic Vikes men's field hockey team 1-0 on Saturday at Tamanawis Field.
Surrey held the balance of possession in the match, but the Vikes did manage to generate some offensive pressure. Freshmen #Matthew Sarmento# was at this best before being sent off for a penalty near the end of the first half, stalling the UVic offensive.
A combination of solid goal tending by both #Jonathan Plumbley# and #Brandon Dziuba# and the defence restricted a strong Surrey forward line to just one goal.
“We did not capitalize on our chance, we were very strong defensively and moving the ball around very well but did not convert,” said fourth year forward Derrick Norton. “Next week is the big rivalry, would be great to beat them on their turf."
Next Saturday the Vikes take on their only Varsity rival UBC Thunderbirds on their home turf. Game is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 13th.
