With only five minutes left in game time,
Matthew Sarmento helped to lift the Uvic men's field hockey team 3-2 over the Surrey Lions.
Gavin Titley and
Gavin Gentles also scored for UVic.
The men's field hockey team will play their next home game against India Club on Oct. 1 at 2:00 p.m. PDT at the UVic field hockey pitch.
The Vikes took the lead only 10 minutes in when Sarmento, with some great individual effort, made his way up the pitch and found Titley alone in front of the goal. With composure, Titley drew around the Surrey goalie to put the Vikes up by one.
Following the go-ahead goal, the UVic midfield line, led by Sarmento,
Derrick Norton and
Brenden Bissett, maintained control of the game instigating several more scoring opportunities. Against the momentum, the Lions did manage to squeeze a tying goal in seconds before the half time whistle.
The Vikes missed several opportunities in the opening of the second half and once again, against the grain, Surrey was able to grab the lead 2-1. Down a goal, forward and Junior National team standout
James Kirkpatrick took it upon himself to get the ball to the other end, after eliminating several Surrey defenders. Following Kirkpatrick's initial shot, Gentles was there to collect the rebound and flick it high into the mesh.
Vikes rookie goalkeeper
David Robertson was called upon in several occasions to keep UVic in the game. It paid off when Sarmento scored the game-winning goal following a fast counterattack that began in the Vikes' circle. The 3-2 victory is the second win for team, following a 3-0 win over the Hawks last weekend in the UBC Invitational tournament.
