VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men's cross country team won their third team title of the season while the women's cross country team won their first of the year in the 2012 Beaver Classic held in Corvallis, Ore., Oct. 19. In the 8-km event the men's team posted a score of 34 and finished with an average time of 0:25:00 while in the 6-km race the women's team scored a 22 and crossed the finish line with an average time of 0:22:03.

Leading the UVic men in the 8-km was Ryan Cassidy (Grande-Digue, NB), coming in third with a time of 0:24:41. Crossing the line sixth was fellow Vike Dylan Haight (Victoria, BC) and in eighth place was Karl Robertson (Leduc, AB). Rounding out the scoring team were Doug Oxland (Nanaimo, BC) and Jackson Bocksnick (Lethbridge, AB), finishing tenth and 14th respectively.
 
The UVic women in the 6-km event were led by Madeline MacDonald (Calgary, AB) in second place with a time of 0:21:41 with the rest of the scoring team crossing the line in quick succession with third, fourth and fifth-place finishes. Coming in third was Jenna Van Vliet (Calgary, AB) with a time of 0:21:46 and in fourth was Brittany Therrien (Victoria, BC), posting a time of 0:22:06. Coming in at fifth was Kendra Pomfret (Roberts Creek, BC) while Rachel Francois (St. Albert, AB) came in at eighth. 
 
“We asked the teams to step up today and the results really showed that,” said Brent Fougner, head coach of the men's and women's cross country teams. “It's certainly an indicator as to what will happen when we race at the CIS tournament in November.”
 
The next meet for the men's and women's teams will be the B.C. Club Championships on Oct. 27 in Abbotsford, B.C.
