Vikes blanked by national team-laden Hawks

Nov. 3: Vikes 0 - 5 Hawks

VICTORIA, B.C. – In a tough match-up against a roster laden with Team Canada players, several of them international standouts, the University of Victoria Vikes were downed by the Vancouver Hawks with a final score of 5-0.

FULL SCHEDULE / ROSTER

The Hawks opened scoring with a field goal from Team Canada's Matthew Guest and the UVic men were put on their back foot for the rest of the game. The Vikes worked hard to defend the onslaught of attack but after some fumbling in their defensive circle a penalty corner was awarded to the Hawks. Vikes defender Matthew Sarmento (Vancouver, BC) did well to block the initial shot but Guest put away his second goal of the game on the rebound and the Hawks doubled their score.

The Vikes had a handful of opportunities in the first half from which they failed to capitalize, costing them several occasions to put themselves on the board. The best chance for the UVic men was an unfortunate near miss by Liam Taaffe (North Vancouver, BC).  Essentially, the Hawks put up a defensive blockade and the Vikes continued to be thwarted by the Vancouver side.

The Vikes came out hard in the second half and looked to even the score sheet but it was not to be as the Hawks tallied three more and the game ended in a 5-0 loss for the Vikes.

Next up for the University of Victoria VIkes men's field hockey team is a game against fellow varsity side the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. The UBC-hosted match-up is set to take place next weekend, Nov. 10 at 12 p.m.
