Monster Erg enters 27th year, determines national indoor rowing champions

Feb. 5: National Indoor Rowing Championship and Monster Erg, 9:30 a.m., McKinnon Gym

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes women's and men's rowing teams are hosting the 27th annual Monster Erg, the B.C. segment of five cross-Canada events as part of the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championship, this Sunday Feb. 5 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at McKinnon Gymnasium.

The Monster Erg is a satellite event for the Crash B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston later in February. Up to four rowers can qualify for Boston through their performance on Saturday if they surpass qualifying times.

The event is also a fund-raiser for the Vikes rowing teams. All 41 ergometers - indoor rowing machines - have been sold for this year's event. There were 11 used ergs for sale - each two years old – and 30 new ergs (Model D, Concept II). This is the 27th annual Canadian Indoor Rowing Championship and Monster Erg event, and UVic will have between 400 and 500 competitors inside McKinnon Gym on Sunday (More Information).

The UVic Monster Erg is the Western-most site of the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships, with concurrent events being held in Regina, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax.
 
A national champion will be determined based on the top result from the five sites.
 
Most races are 2,000 metres in length, with several 1,000 and 500 metre races mixed in, including a 4x500 relay race for novice and alumni crews. Monitors will show live progress of the event.
 
Admission to the event is free, and parking is $2 on campus on Saturdays. Registration information is available at www.govikesgo.com.
