VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes men's field hockey team lost 6-5 to a internationally experienced India Club team in a regular season match up of the Vancouver men's field hockey premier league on Nov. 9 at UVic's field hockey pitch. The Vikes netted two early goals and three late goals to sandwich six goals by the visitors.
Rookie
Aidan Pye scored two goals, while
Riley Tringham,
Sam Jones and
Prabh Sahota each got on the board with one to pace the young Vikes squad. First-year goalie
Toby Owen made several key saves despite allowing a four goals in a 10-minute span.
For India Club, Jaswinder Singh scored the hat-trick that got India Club back on track after going down 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes of play. Harsimranjit Mahal tallied twice, while former team Canada stand out Bindi Kullar also got on the board.
The Vikes opened the scoring in the 5th minute of play after
Prabh Sahota worked the ball in on the left side of the circle. The cross was immediately touched toward goal but the keeper made a save that left a floating rebound at the top of the cirlcle. Tringham blasted the ball into the top right hand corner to get the Vikes up 1-0.
Momentum tilted in favour of the Vikes who went up 2-0 when Pye made good on a back hand flick after a wave of Vikes pressure.
Midway through the opening frame,
Connor Martin was sent off the pitch for five minutes due to a high stick. India Club wasted no time and put in two goals in two minutes two tie the game at two entering the break.
In the second half the teams traded opportunities but two goals each of Singh and Mahal left the visitors with four unanswered goals. All four goals came between the 45th and 55th minutes of play.
The Vikes responded with three quick goals of their own beginning at the 60th minute-mark. Sahota finished to cut the lead to three, at 6-3.
Pye tallied again at the 67th, while former junior national team standout Jones finished on a penalty corner with one minute to go to make it 6-5 in favour of India Club.
