The University of Victoria is planning a new athletics and recreation facility, which would provide open access for students to expanded services. The university proposes to introduce a new athletics and recreation building fee in the fall of 2012 to cover part of the cost. This is to invite you to participate in a consultative ballot on this initiative.
- The total cost of the project is $58.7 million and students are being asked to make a contribution of $21.6 million. Additional funding would come from UVic ($21.6 million) and externally-raised funds ($15.6 million).
- Student support would come from a new stand-alone athletics and recreation building fee of $55/term for full-time students. Full-time graduate students and part-time undergraduate students would pay $27.50/term during the summer, and graduate students would be able to opt-out for the summer term.
- Students are being asked to contribute toward the facilities they would use, therefore fees will not be collected until the facility opens in 2012.
- Students would have access to all athletic and recreation facilities in the new building, including the fitness and weight centre, for which there is currently a separate fee.
- The new building would provide enhanced sports and recreation services through state-of-the-art facilities and expanded program opportunities. Some of the building features include a field house, a fitness and weight centre, dance and yoga studios, a spectator gymnasium, and a climbing tower - which will be available for free drop-in times and discounted recreational programs.
This ballot is part of a larger consultative process. The results are not binding; they will inform how the university proceeds with the project.
