Rookies win big at Clan Cup

BURNABY - Led by strong individual performances from rookies #Nicholas Sinclair# and #Siobhan Newell#, the UVic Vikes swimming team finished second at the Clan Cup International and won 29 individual medals.

Sinclair, a first year swimmer with the Vikes, led the medal haul with five first-place finishes and four bronze medals. The Oak Bay graduate captured gold in the 50 back, 400 free, 800 free and 1500 free. Sinclair finished third in the 200 back, 200 IM, and 200 free relay.

Newell, a first year swimmer from Kingston, Ont., captured four medals in total. Newell won silver in the 100 free, and won bronze in the 200 free, 400 free, and 200 free relay.

The Vikes finished second overall in the team standings with 329 points, behind host and champion Simon Fraser. Simon Fraser totaled 546 points to win the Cup for the first time in two years.

Other top performances by the Vikes men included #Jeff Saganski# winning gold in the 50 and 100 fly, and taking silver in the 200 fly. #David Killy# took bronze in the 50 and 200 fly. #Eric Stein# won silver in the 1500m and third in the 400 IM.

Women's medalists also included #Eleanora Dalling# taking silver in the 200 back, and also winning bronze in the 50 and 100 back. #Jessica Pietrusiak# brought home silver in the 200 fly. #Katie Cook# finished third in the 1500m, and #Danielle Newton# won bronze in the 50 fly.
