VICTORIA - Wildcards and tie-breakers will be topics of conversation at McKinnon Gym this weekend, but above all else, the UVic Vikes men's basketball team needs to pick up a win over Simon Fraser in order to have a chance at a post-season berth.
GAME INFORMATION
Sat. Feb. 13 vs. Simon Fraser Clan (McKinnon Gym) - 3pm
SCOUTING THE VIKES
At 8-9, the Vikes need a win and a Trinity Western loss to have a chance at the conference's wildcard berth into the post-season. The wildcard measures the fourth seed in the Pacific versus the fifth seed in the Prairie based on eight selection criteria. Come Saturday, the Vikes are hoping homecourt provides the advantage, as they own a 58-16 record on the Island since 2004. Senior #Cyril Indome# will look to extend his varsity career by at least another weekend. The lone graduating player on this year's roster has averaged 10.8 points this season and will be recognized prior to tip-off.
SCOUTING THE CLAN
Ranked no. 7 with a 14-3 conference mark, SFU has already locked up the second seed in the Pacific. The Clan have won seven of their last eight games and own an impressive 8-1 road record this season. SFU's strength has been their veteran backcourt with fifth year guards Sean Burke, Kevin Shaw and Matt Kuzminski accounting for 51 percent of their offence, and also helping the Clan rank as the league's best three-point shooting team (38.4%). Kuzminski, a Nanaimo native and former UVic guard, leads the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game.
HEAD TO HEAD
In the conference opener, Simon Fraser ended an 11-game futility streak on the Island with a 78-75 victory over the Vikes. The win was just the Clan's second in the past 17 games versus UVic. In all likelihood this will be the final meeting between these two sides as Simon Fraser leaves for NCAA Division II next season.
