FREDERICTON - With the opening round of the 2010 RCGA University Golf Championships completed, the UVic Vikes women sit second behind the UBC Thunderbirds, while the men will have to make up some ground in seventh.

#Anne Balser# led the Vikes contingent on day one at the par-72 Kingswood Park course, shooting a three-over 75. The Digby, N.S. native was even through eight holes, but ran into some trouble on the final three and finished three-over 75. #Megan Woodland#, who was UVic's top finisher at the NAIA Championships and placed ninth overall, finished the day five-over 77.
With a combined team score of 313, the Vikes trail leader UBC by 16 strokes. The T-Birds, who are defending champs and last week were crowned NAIA champs, finished day one with a team score of nine-over and Kylie Barros sits atop the individual leaderboard at one-over 73.
On the men's side, despite standout performances from veteran #Mitch Evanecz# and rookie #Sam Holland#, the Vikes are tied for seventh in the team standings. UVic has a combined score of 296, but are a mere seven strokes shy of current leader Universite de Montreal.
Evanecz, a two-time NAIA All-American and runner-up at last week's Alberta Open, carded a one-over 71 and currently sits tied for sixth place. Holland, a 2010 NAIA Rookie team selection, finished the round even-par 72 and is in 13th place. Montreal golfers Phillippe-Andre Bannon and Benoit Gordon share the top spot on the leaderboard at three-under 69.
Other UVic women's entries included #Michaela Misener# (80), #Alyssa Herkel# (81) and #Kristy Chew# (87). While on the men's side, competitors included, #Jordan Ediger# (76), #James Holland# (77), and #Steven Lane# (79).
The 72-hole competition resumes Tuesday morning at Kingswood Park. The women's first and only RCGA title came in 2008, while the men are three-time champs with victories in 2003, '04 and '06.
