Cassidy leads Vikes to fourth-straight Canada West title

Nov. 9: CIS and Canada West cross-country championship (London, Ont.)

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men's cross-country team powered their way to their fourth-straight and 14th overall Canada West title, while also finishing sixth overall in the CIS. The CIS championship, hosted by Western University in London, Ont., saw the Guelph Gryphons capture the national title for a remarkable eigth-straight time.

For the men's 10-km race, Cassidy was the top Vike finishing sixth in the CIS standings and second in the Canada West. The third year crossed the line in 31:25.6 behind Regina's Matthew Johnson (31:21.8). Guelph's Aaron Hendrikx finished in the top time of 30:49.3 to earn Athlete of the Year honours. Cassidy was named one of seven CIS First Team All-Canadians and garnered him a spot on team Canada for the 2014 FISU cross-country games hosted in Entebbe, Uganda.
 
The single race counted for both the CIS and Canada West standings, resulting in Victoria taking first-place in the conference with 36 points, while the Trinity Western Spartans trailed with 64. The Vikes had four Vikes in the top-10 for the Canada West including Olivier Collin, Kyle Irvine and Forrest Simpson. Cassidy, Collin and Irvine were named conference first team all-stars.
 
Vike Patrick Psotka finished 14th in a time of 33:28.3, while Josh Clothier was 20th (33:59.5). Psotka and Simpson were named to the Canada West Second team list.
 
Senior Irvine was also awarded the CIS student-athlete of the year award, while head Brent Fougner was named Canada West coach of the year.
