VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team entered the 2013 season looking to build off a 2012 campaign that saw them winning CIS bronze on home turf.

Led by
Tracy David in her 12
th season at the helm of the women's soccer program, the Vikes opened up their Canada West season on home turf against the UNBC Timberwolves. Fifth-year captain Jackie Harrison led the way for the Vikes on opening day, posting two goals, while teammate
Jaclyn Sawicki and
Maryse Reichgeld added tallies of their own in a 4-1 victory.
Â
The Vikes headed to Vancouver the following weekend for a pair of games against the Trinity Western Spartans and UBC Thunderbirds. Harrison opened the scoring for the Vikes on a penalty kick, while fourth-year
Carlita Branion-Calles scored the go-ahead goal in extra time to give the Vikes their second win of the season.
Â
The next day saw the Vikes facing the rival Thunderbirds in foggy conditions that proved equally difficult for both sides. A miscue between Vikes goalkeeper
Tanya Jones and
Mallory Hackett was the deciding factor in the match, resulting in an own goal that would prove to be the game winner.
Â
The Vikes then headed to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars. High winds contributed to a scoreless first half as both teams attempted to get into a rhythm. Second-half substitutions
Cassie Dennis and
Allie Wiebe were the difference in the game, coming off the bench to score in the 59
th and 66
th minutes to secure a 2-1 victory.
Â
The following day saw UVic taking on the undefeated Pandas. Despite holding a majority of possession in the game, the Vikes were unable to connect in the offensive zone, falling 2-0 off a goal from Julia Ignacio as well as an own goal off an Ignacio cross-pass.
Â
After four games on the road, the Vikes returned to Centennial Stadium to take on the UFV Cascades. In torrential downpour that forced the game to move to UVic's secondary turf, fifth-year
Lindsay Hoetzel notched her first goal of the season while Sawicki added one of her own as the Vikes went on to earn a 2-0 decision. The victory earned goalkeeper Jones her first clean sheet of the season.
Â
The following weekend saw the Vikes earning perhaps their most impressive victory of the season as they put seven goals away in a 7-1 victory. Seven different Vikes notched goals in the contest. The win was followed up with yet another victory, as Greig and Harrison posted goals in a 2-1 victory the following day.
Â
The Vikes continued to produce wins, winning back-to-back games against the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0 and 4-0 in their final regular season games at Centennial Stadium, pushing their season record to 8-2-0 with two games remaining.
Â
In their final weekend of the Canada West regular season, the Vikes defeated the Manitoba Bisons 1-0 off a goal from
Emma Greig. The win put the Vikes into a tie with UBC for first-place overall in the conference.
Â
The Vikes impressed in their regular season finale, outshooting the Winnipeg Wesmen 29-3 overall in a 4-0 victory. The Vikes found scoring from
Natasha Magnus, Branion-Calles and Reichgeld. The victory also saw the Vikes leapfrog UBC to secure top-spot in the conference with the opportunity to host the Canada West Final Four on home turf a distinct possibility.
Â
Looking to stay undefeated on home turf, the Vikes faced off against the Regina Cougars in Canada West quarterfinal action. Three players contributed on offense as the Vikes overwhelmed their opposition with a combination of speed and relentless attack on net. Harrison and Dennis each put up a pair of goals with a fifth from
Emma Greig as the Vikes went on to a 5-1 victory.
Â
With two spots in the CIS Championships up for grabs, the stakes were high the following weekend as four teams converged upon Centennial Stadium in the Canada West Final Four playoffs. The Vikes hopes of a return to the CIS Championships were dashed when Trinity Western scored in double-overtime to send them to a bronze medal matchup. Coming off the bench in the 67
th minute of the second half, Caitlin Haines buried her chance in overtime when goalkeeper
Tanya Jones slipped at the top of the six-yard box.
Â
Faced with the reality of not qualifying for the CIS Championships, the Vikes regrouped nonetheless, facing off the next day against the UBC Thunderbirds in another rain soaked affair. The game required penalty kicks, where Harrison, Hoetzel and
Shannon Elder buried their chances to win 3-1 and earn a Canada West bronze medal, finishing their season on a positive note.
