VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes basketball programs will end their regular season in style, hosting the 7th Annual Shoot for the Cure at Ken and Kathy Shields Court in the McKinnon Gymnasium on Feb. 14. Mainland rivals the UBC Thunderbirds will make the trek across the pond for the final Vikes home games with the women tipping off at 6 p.m. and the men following at 8 p.m.

For one game a year, the Vikes athletes sport their newly-designed pink and white uniforms in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) and the CIS Shoot for the Cure initiative.
Vikes Athletics and Recreation have set their 2014 goal as
$5,000 and will be partnering with CTV Vancouver Island, KOOL FM and CFAX to host the event. To help the Vikes create a future without breast cancer and reach their target in support of the CBCF, donate online at:

The Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success since it was launched in the fall of 2007 with over $600,000 in donations. Last season, for the second year in a row, all CIS women's basketball schools participated in the program. In the first five years of the initiative, the WBCA had presented cheques of $50,320.87, $81,512.96, $94,650.96, $104,763.53 and $98,706.92 to the CBCF, with another $82,439.34 going to local organizations.
Once again this year, CIS schools will raise money through regular season games, non-conference matches, tournaments and special events. The 2013-14 Shoot for the Cure schedule is currently comprised of 50 events on 43 campuses. More events will be announced over the next few weeks. A total of 45 universities compete in CIS women's basketball.
The fundraising initiative was the brainchild of
Rod Gilpin, the long-time bench boss of the Bishop's women's program now in his fourth season as head coach of the Gaiters' men's team.
