Favourite moment as a Vike: This is a really tough one for sure because I’ve had a lot of great moments rowing for UVic. I would have to say winning Brown Cup against UBC this past spring was a really stand-out Vikes moment. As a lightweight I don't have a lot of opportunity to be in a big crew boat so it was a lot of fun to race down the course with a team. It’s also a way better story to be the underdog crew that pulls through to win a tight race. Everyone loves an underdog and at that point we had lost to UBC all season with Brown Cup as our grand finale. I don't think I’ve ever felt so much trust for my team as I did in that race. Even though it was an extremely tight race for all 3.5 km I had a gut feeling that we were going to pull through and win. It was such a close race that we didn’t even know we had won until we got to the dock and a bunch of Vikes rowers, supporters, and alumni were there with a deafening cheer to let us know we had beat UBC. It was pretty magical and I’d say it was probably the most proud I’ve felt to be a Vike.
Most influential athlete/ mentor in your career: My junior coach Chris Davidson at the Calgary Rowing Club taught me how to have fun and pull hard - and probably all the important technique that I have today. I’ve learned a huge amount from the positive energy and interesting insights of my two coaches John Wetzstein and Alan Roaf over the past year. I also look up to any lightweight woman on the international stage - they’re all pretty badass.
Favourite pump-up song:Â I love Chromeo. Racing is just like a chill dance party right?
Favourite workout:Â The 2 km erg is pretty chill. HA. I actually do enjoy 2x2k at 95% of race pace because it always makes me realize that 2ks and pbs are doable. Anything on the water where I get to go head to head with a bunch of boats is always fun too.
Favourite recovery meal:Â peanut butter, etc.
Favourite pre-workout food: peanut butter, etc. (peanut butter = pbs)
Favourite cross-training activity: Running and road cycling
Degree/Area of Study: Honours Political Science
Favourite race/regatta: I love the Royal Canadian Henley because of the awesome energy that lights up the entire city of St. Catharines. Also the cheering from the grandstands always makes that last 500m go by pretty quick.
Favourite place to eat on campus: Munchie Bar because Kicking Horse coffee helps me with my daily struggles of waking up at 5 am.
Favourite place to hang out on/near campus: The library. Obviously. #libsparty2015
Favourite thing about living in Victoria: Honestly, it’s just really great that the lake never freezes especially after enduring that seven month winter season in Calgary. That ocean air isn’t too bad either and sometimes it blows my mind how many gorgeous beaches I can pass on an hour run. It’s just really beautiful here. I’ll probably never leave.
Nickname: everyone just calls me Cate
