VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women's rowing crews dominated at the Burnaby Lake hosted Western Canadian University Rowing Championship on Oct. 17. Point totals were ranked across six events including the varsity coxed four, pair, single, lightweight coxed four and lightweight double. Vikes crews won three gold, two sliver and two bronze to take home the title with 18 points.
FULL RESULTS Gold medallists for the Vikes women included Layla Balooch in the varsity 1x,
Deborah Snell in the lightweight 1x, and
Cate White and
Lauren Goforth in the lightweight 2x.
The Vikes coxed four consisted of Rebecca Zimmerman,
Madeline Spangehl,
Maxine Chapman,
McKenna Simpson and Rebecca Wilder. That crew crossed in 7:25.10 behind two UBC crews including the gold-medal crew in 7:16.30 and the silver-medal crew in 7:20.90.
Snell took gold in the lightweight single in a time of 8:22.37, while fellow Vike
Cate White followed with a silver medal in 8:27.70. Balooch won gold in the women's varsity single in a time of 8:05.24, ahead of a Calgary boat (8:15.95).
The lightweight four that included White, Snell, Goforth,
Jessica Bateman and
Cassidy Fernandes won gold in 7:33.10. UBC followed in 7:36.70.
Zimmerman and Vike Emma Durham took bronze in the varsity pair in a time of 8:04.04 behind two UBC crews that crossed in 7:53.94 and 8:00.70.
The Vikes varsity eight won silver in a time of 6:52.83 behind a strong UBC crew (6:41.17), while the Vikes JV eights came in second, behind UBC, in a time of 7:29.16. The Vikes novice eights, racing 1000 meters, took first in 3:36.90 ahead of Lakeland and another Vikes novice crew.
Following point totals the Vikes women took home the Western banner with 18 points ,while UBC had 13 points and Calgary had two.
Up next the Vikes gear up for their first home event of the fall season, the Head and Tail of the Gorge, hosted at the Gorge Waterway in Victoria on Oct. 24-25. Just two days following that event the varsity crews will head to Antigonish, N.S. for CURC's. The men's eight will defend their gold medal from 2014, while the Vikes reserve crews will head to Washington to compete in the Head of the Lake event.
