Number one 'Horns trounce Vikes

VICTORIA – The two-time defending CIS champions Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the UVic Vikes women's rugby team 79-0 Friday afternoon at Wallace Field.

Ten different players scored tries for no. 1 ranked Lethbridge, who crossed the goal line four times within the first 20 minutes of play. Canadian 7s member Andrea Letal paced the attack with three scores.

Lethbridge's Kendra Gavellin and Brittany Orr each scored twice. The balance of the 'Horns scoring came from Austin Ogrins, Kelsey Willoughby, Alex Hendricks, Laura Murphy-Burke, Emily Stearns and Ashley Zaremba.

The win improves the 'Horns record to 2-0, and Lethbridge has yet to concede a single point in two games. In Lethbridge's home opener, they defeated the upstart Calgary Dinos 66-0.

The Vikes had a few good runs into the 'Horns zone with their best chance coming off a 60-yard gain late in the first half but the 'Horns defence was too solid to break through.

The loss drops the Vikes to 0-2 in Canada West conference play, but will look to rebound on Sunday when they host Calgary. Calgary is in their first year of conference play and is 0-2. Game time is 11:30 a.m. at Wallace Field.
