EDMONTON – The UVic Vikes women's rugby team will play for the Canada West bronze after being dealt a 86-0 loss by the no. 1 Lethbridge Pronghorns in Friday's conference championship semifinal.
The Pronghorns had no trouble breaking through the Vikes defence as they took an early lead and finished at 56-0 at half time.
'Horns sophomore flyhalf Laura Murphy-Burke, from Surrey, BC, had two tries and eight converts to lead Lethbridge with 26 points. Wing Andrea Letal had three tries in the win, Ashley MacDonald and Shannon Court each added two, while Kelsey Willoughby, Emily Steams, Katelyn Jonsson, Brittany Orr and Ashley Zaremba added singles for the two-time national defending champions.
The second half started well for the Vikes as they were snuffing out every Lethbridge drive.
Zaremba finally broke though the Vikes defense, and was followed by two tries from Letal in the span of four minutes.
Third-year #Chelsey Minter# had Victoria's best chance of the game, when she charged hard through the Lethbridge tackling, but found herself just on the outside of the Lethbridge goal line after being gang-tackled. The Sidney, BC native and member of Canada's U-20 team was one of the best Vikes on the day.
'Horns' Shannon Court added a pair of tries late in the second half, and Murphy-Burke converted on both to send Lethbridge to final.
The Vikes will now take on the UBC Thunderbirds Sunday morning for the Bronze in Edmonton. The T-Birds lost their semifinal 19-15 to the Alberta Pandas. Game time is 11am.
