Logan earns All-Star honours; T-Birds take bronze

EDMONTON – Third-year center Radha Jain, a Mississauga, ON native, scored three tries and Michelle Helmeczi had kicked three converts as the UBC Thunderbirds defeated their provincial rivals the UVic Vikes women's rugby team 46-0 in the third place game at the Canada West championship.

With the win the T-Birds finish third at the conference championship tournament, but still advance to the National championship weekend, November 6-8, as tournament hosts.

Jain, who also plays for Canada's U-20 team, was a terror all weekend on opposing defenses with her blazing speed and open-field elusiveness. The Human Kinetics student also had a try against Alberta in the semi-final, giving her four on the weekend.

UBC did all the damage they needed to do in the opening half, scoring 27 points on their beleaguered opponents, getting a pair of trys from Jain, two converts from senior flyhalf Helmeczi and single trys from Caitlin Harris, and Darcy Patterson.

The Vikes came close to cracking their weekend long goose-egg in the second half, getting strong runs from Andrina Nixon and Chelsey Minter, but were unable to break the Thunderbird defense.

After Jennifer Brule and Sidney Eaden added trys, and Helmeczi added a pair of converts, Jain added her third try of the game to close out the scoring at 46-0, and give UBC the win.

After the game, the Canada West announced the conference All-Stars and Award winners. The lone Vikes recipient of post-season honours was backrow Sarah Logan.
