McGinnis try ends drought

VICTORIA - #Selina McGinnis#' 50 metre try-scoring run made history on Sunday afternoon as the UVic Vikes women's rugby team edged out the Calgary Dinos 5-0 and posted their first win since 2001.

"This is a long time coming," Vikes head coach #Brad Skene# said as his team celebrated the victory. "Beating Calgary shows that we deserve to be here and are capable of competing in such a tough division."

Calgary was inside the Vikes twenty-two for much of the opening minutes but failed to turn the possession into tries.

After multiple penalties were called against the visitors the Vikes spread the Dinos thin and McGinnis capitalized on a defensive gap to score in the 27th minute.

"Selina is an excellent runner with the ball," Skene said of the game's only try scorer. "Her evasiveness and speed are key weapons to our offence."

The Vikes will look to build on their 1-2 record when they host the UBC Thunderbirds on Sunday, October 17th. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30am at Wallace Field.
