Canada West champs top week one

VICTORIA - Captains #Cole McFarlane# and #Sam Wingham# rallied the UVic Vikes men's soccer team to victory on Sunday afternoon taking a 2-1 win against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The defending Canada West champion Vikes are the conference's only team to escape the opening weekend unscathed, taking six points with a pair of wins.

Lethbridge struck first in the 21st minute as striker Lucas Rajcic took advantage of the Vikes slow start.

As the half drew to a close the visitors conceded a penalty and it was Canada West MVP Cole McFarlane who hammered his shot past Pronghorns' keeper Jodran Campbell.

A key half time strategic adjustment saw Wingham slot in at striker where it took just eight minutes for the Canada West All Star to give the Vikes a 2-1 lead.

"We were trying to maintain possession and the positional switch changed the game for us," goal scorer McFarlane said after the final whistle. "With that size up front winning the balls in the air, that really made the difference."

The Vikes now look to build on their perfect 2-0 start to the season when they head west to take on the Alberta Golden Bears and Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend.
