VICTORIA - In a hotly contested battle for Canada West supremacy, the no. 2 UVic Vikes men's soccer team were downed 3-0 by the no. 3 Trinity Western Spartans.
In a rematch of last year's conference final, the Spartans avenged the 4-1 defeat they suffered a year ago at Centennial Stadium. The victory sees the Spartans remain undefeated atop the Canada West conference standings at 4-0-2 and the Vikes drop to 3-2-1.
"We had everything to play for because the winner of today would be leading Canada West," Vikes head coach #
Bruce Wilson# said of his side's second straight loss. "You have to give credit to Trinity Western because they came and scored three goals on the road. We'll have to tighten up at the back and forget about this weekend."
David Rowse struck first in the tenth minute blasting a long-range effort past Vikes 'keeper #Dan Kilpatrick#. Ioannis Tsoulouhas added to the Vikes woes in the 35th minute before Shawn Parkes completed the 3-0 victory in the 77th minute.
A total of 32 fouls were called, four yellows were issued and Trinity Western head coach Pat Rohla was ejected in a game where emotions ran high.
The Vikes will look to rebound form the weekend series losses when they host the Alberta Golden Bears and Saskatchewan Huskies next week. Both matches are scheduled or 2:15 p.m at Centennial Stadium.
