Vikes win NAIA Regional Championship

MONROE, Ore. - With all five members placing in the top 10, including a first-place victory by freshman Sam Holland, the UVic Vikes men's golf team won their 2010 NAIA Regional Championship.

The no. 15 Vikes finished with an impressive 28-stroke victory at Diamond Woods Golf Course, also clinching the region's berth in the NAIA Championship. The Vikes team score of 853 defeated the no. 22 UBC Thunderbirds, who finished at 881.

Sam Holland, a rookie from New Migas, N.S., finished atop the individual leaderboard with a 9-stroke victory in the 54-hole event. Holland shot rounds of 70, 67 and 68 to finish 11-under 205, notching his first varsity tourney win.

"We absolutely clicked and Sam was simply on fire," said Vikes head coach Bryan Carbery. "For anyone to score a double-digit under par on this course is unbelievable. "

Holland's twin brother, James, was 10 strokes shy of sharing the lead after carding a 1-over 215. The Holland brothers occupied the top two spots on the leaderboard entering the final day, but Concordia's Will Snow spoiled the duo's potential 1-2 finish.

Other Vikes' competitors included veterans #Steven Lane# and Chase Teron sharing sixth place, as both carded a 219 to finish 3-over. Teron recorded a hole-in-one on the last shot of his opening round. Jordan Ediger captured a share of eighth place after shooting 220 to finish 4-over.

The NAIA Championships take place May 18-21 at TPC Deere Run, home of the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic. Last year, the Vikes placed 14th at the NAIA Championship.
