VANCOUVER - The UVic men's field hockey team tied the United Brothers 2-2 on Sept. 25. The game tying goal came from
Matthew Sarmento late in the second half.
James Kirkpatrick would also score for the Vikes side.
The Vikes have now concluded the first two games of their season, now 1-0-1 in the Vancouver Premier League.
In the first minute of play UVic captain
Graeme Nawn intentionally disrupted a breakaway chance for United, resulting in Nawn being sent off with a yellow card, as well as a penalty stroke for the United Brothers. Uvic goaltender Davis Roberston managed to get a stick on the stroke but the ball still found its way to the mesh, giving the United Brothers a 1-0 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Robertson would again be called to action, challenging a breakaway but would draw a second penalty stroke after colliding with the attacker. The penalty shot was fired into the low right corner of the net, lifting the United Brothers 2-0 over the Vikes.
UVic rebounded with strong offensive pressure led by Junior National team standout
James Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick was relentless in his opponent's circle, forcing a loose ball through traffic and over the goal line to give UVic their first goal of the match.
Building on Kirkpatrick's goal, UVic forward
Derek Wiggins led the attack making a long pass to midfielder
Matthew Sarmento would tie the game 2-2.
Opportunities arose in both ends following the tying goal. UVic was unable to capitalize on their three penalty corners throughout the game and would fend off the United Brothers attack to take the 1 point.
“It showed a tremendous amount of perseverance,” assistant Coach
Leo Smyth said about the come back tie. “We may have a more inexperienced group of players, but we play with a lot of heart.”
Head coach Michael Lee said, “(I was) happy with the way we competed. It was a good show of composure to come back and get the tie.”
UVic will look to continue their unbeaten streak next weekend with their home opener on Oct. 1 at 1:00 p.m. PDT at the UVic field hockey turf.
