Vikes learn lesson from foe with strong Vikes ties

Feb. 11: Velox 29 UVic 5

VICTORIA - A strong contingency of former Vikes outplayed the current UVic side as the Velox Valkyries defeated UVic's women's rugby team 29-5 on Feb. 11.

The young Vikes have always had a rivalry with their neighbours at Velox. Lately, the competition between these two teams has taken on a new look as several familiar faces are now suiting up for the opposition.

Most recently the Valkyries have acquired veterans #Chelsey Minter# and #Jesse Olynyk#, who have been off this season due to injury. Both Minter and Olynyk added tries for the Valkyries. Also getting on the board was recent Vike Amanda Campbell, who  tallied one try and one conversion for the Velox rivals.

Even though the end result was not favourable the young Vikes squad displayed great pressure and determination on defence. Their hard work to gain ground inch by inch was finally rewarded with a late try by Stefani Hanson (Courtenay, B.C.)

The UVic women have a bye next weekend but will return to regular season action on Feb. 25 at Wallace Field against the Bayside Sharks.
