Vikes defeated by Dinos in second Canada West battle of the season

Sept. 23: UVic 3 - 47 Calgary

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women's rugby team had a tough day on the turf against the University of Calgary Dinos, the Vikes fell 47-3 against the Dinos on Sunday at Victoria's Wallace Field. The Dinos now advance to 2-0 while the Vikes drop to 0-2.

FULL SCHEDULE / ROSTER

As last season's Canada West bronze medal winners, the Dinos demonstrated that the momentum gained from the previous year's result has led to great improvement. With tries by veterans Ellen McGregor, Brynna Walker, and Amanda Williams, as well as returnees Kelcey Leavitt and Leah Conforti, with two by rookie to watch Natasha Loucks, the Dinos were a strong side that capitalized on Vikes' errors. Additionally, phenomenal kicking by second-year Kate Scotland saw all tries converted, save for one.

The only points posted for the Vikes came late in the first half when the Vikes earned a penalty goal as Alanna Cryer (Calgary, Alta.) kicked for three just past the 10-metre line. Laura Crowe-Hutchon (West Vancouver, BC) played a good defensive game for the UVic women while fourth-year scrumhalf Kehla Guimond (Sidney, BC) and flyhalf Kara Galbraith (Ladysmith, BC) worked hard to create offensive opportunities.

Twenty minutes into the game the Dinos had put up 14 points on the board against a Vikes team caught on their back foot. Leah Conforti scored the first try for the Dinos with a first of many converts for kicker Kate Scotland.

The second try of the game for the Dinos, right through the posts, came from second-year standout Brynna Walker. Scotland added another two points to the board with an effortless kick.

The Vikes played for several minutes deep in the offensive end and won several consecutive scrums but were unable to capitalize until Alanna Cryer (Calgary, Alta.) earned three points for a well-placed kick.

Just after the half Calgary scored two quick tries with two converts. Bogged down in the defensive zone the Vikes attempted to clear the ball but the kick was blocked and resulted in another try on the far right of the touchline. An impressive kick by Scotland landed the Dinos another two points.

A yellow card on Dinos' number four gave the Vikes an opportunity but the more aggressive visiting team did not let up, earning another two tries by centre Leavitt and backrower McGregor before the final whistle.

“With a young team there's an intimidation factor that plays a role,” said Mark Hall, head coach of the Vikes women's rugby team. “They were tough girls to put down and not that we weren't trying, but we don't have that real killer instinct at the moment. There were some really encouraging parts of the game and we have four or five years with these girls so we just need more games and more experience.”

The Dinos are now 2-0 in the Canada West conference while the Vikes fall to 0-2. The Dinos' next match-up is a home game against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sept. 29 and the Vikes will host the University of Alberta Pandas on Sept. 28 at 5:00 p.m. on Wallace Field.
