Vikes dominate in 84-5 victory over Cowichan

Sept. 26 Vikes vs. Cowichan (Wallace Field, Victoria)

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes last game resulted in a heartbreaking loss against UBC that eliminated them from 2013 playoff contention. On Saturday, they channeled some of that anger towards Cowichan in a blowout 84-5 victory at Wallace Field.

The Vikes had high expectations entering the 2013 Canada West season, but following a variety of injuries to key recruits such as Team Canada member Jess Neilson, among others, the Vikes quickly succumbed to inexperience in their lineup and fell to a 1-3 regular season record. Entering their first game of the BCRU season, the Vikes seemed determined to prove a point.

"In this case, we had more skill, were more fit and we've played some tough teams that have only made us better," said head coach Mark Hall. "We certainly needed a win, because it's been another tough season for us. Our team certainly showed what we are capable of doing."

Nine regulars were still unable to play in Saturday's game, but it didn't seem to matter with the game never in question. The Vikes dominated throughout the game, scoring consecutive tries throughout the match to secure the victory.

The Vikes will face much stiffer competition when they face Velox rugby club, Nov. 9, also at Wallace Field.
