VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes found their second-straight 3-0 victory over the Calgary Dinos to secure an undefeated 4-0-2 record in the Canada West. The young Dinos fall to 0-6-0, while the Vikes will now refocus on their final two matches where they have a chance to defend their 2013 Canada West title and earn a first-place seed at the 2014 CIS national championship.
Third-year Social Sciences major
Amanda Kurianowicz was the difference for the Vikes today potting all three goals for Victoria. The Vikes played much to the same tempo as the previous day's win over Calgary, earning 13 shots on goal and 23 penalty corners in total. Unable to convert on any of their corners today, the Vikes showed their strength in field play with quality distribution from midfielder
Kathleen Leahy and defender
Andrea Jones.
For Calgary, the heroics once again fell to fourth-year goal keeper Alicia Frisch, who logged 10 saves, and was the organizing voice on the pitch for the young Dinos squad. Defender Jessica Britton, Madison Jarvis and Marion Arnott were also key in guarding the circle perimeter, while Michelle Patterson seemed to be the lone Dino sparking any form of attack.
The opening half was a similar scenario of yesterday's match up as Calgary provided heavy numbers in their 25-yard area, making it difficult for Victoria to find attacking space. The Vikes had numerous opportunities but a lack of finish had them up by two goals at the break while generating 15 shots and 10 penalty corners.
It took 20 minutes of play for Victoria to get on the board, while that entire time Calgary failed to muster a shot in the other end. Leahy drove down the right side of the pitch and found an open
Mei Lin Cheung in a dangerous top-of-the-circle position. Cheung's ensuing back-hand shot wasn't quite executed properly but fell nicely for Kurianowicz to notch her second of the weekend. The third-year forward one-timed the ball past Frisch to get the Vikes up 1-0.
The Vikes had numerous penalty corner chances that were stymied by a compact Calgary defence line that didn't even allow Frisch to have to make a save. The Vikes tried all combination of set pieces but only found a second goal in free play.
In the 27
th minute Kurianowicz picked up a loose ball outside the circle and walked the ball in uncontested. A hard blast into the bottom corner beat Frisch stick side for Kurianowicz's second goal of the game and a Vikes 2-0 lead. The pair of goals remained the only tallies entering half time.
Following the break it was much of the same tempo as the Vikes, though with all the possession, struggled to generate any major scoring opportunities outside of another 11 penalty corners. Frisch was forced to only make three saves in the second frame.
Calgary's Britton and Janelle Rice were again stand out in the middle of the pitch anchoring the Dinos to a solid defensive performance.
For the Vikes, it was all Kurianowicz as the forward made it a hat trick in the 65
th minute putting a way a loose ball in the circle for goal number three in the game. Up 3-0, the Vikes continued to move the ball around with some good ball speed from defenders
Rosie Beale,
Alexis Veljacic and
Annie Walters-Shumka. The Vikes had one last penalty corner opportunity as time expired but unable to generate a shot, settled for the 3-0 final score line.
The Vikes will need to revisit their offensive creativity in preparation for next week's match up against the three-time CIS defending national champions, the UBC Thunderbirds, Oct. 18-19 in Victoria. Both games will be at 11 a.m.
