VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women's field hockey team capped off their regular season with a 4-0 win over the visiting Calgary Dinos. It was the last home game for Vikes fifth-year
Alanna Macdonald and she didn't disappoint after contributing two first-half goals to ensure the Vikes an undefeated 7-0-1 season.
Â
BOX SCOREUnlike the game the previous day, the Vikes wasted no time getting on the board as
Amanda Kurianowicz smashed home a close-range rebound to put the home side up 1-0.
Annie Walters-Shumka created the opening chance with a hard shot on net but Calgary keeper Beckett Frisch gave up a juicy rebound for Kurianowicz to pot her fifth of the season.
Â
Calgary struggled to get out of their end despite some quality defensive work from second-year Dino Kelsey Noble and fourth year Kimiko Durrer.
Â
The Vikes were rewarded for their offensive pressure, capitalizing in the 16
th and 17
th minute. Senior Macdonald blasted a shot from the left side of the circle and the ball took a deflection to beat Frisch stick side and high for a 2-0 Vikes lead.
Â
Less than a minute later the Vikes generated a nice passing play on the right side baseline. The ball was slotted to second-year Vike
Lindsay Cole, whose shot waffled wide but to the open stick of Macdonald. The Coquitlam, B.C. native knocked the ball in the open net for a 3-0 Victoria lead.
Â
The Vikes continued to put on the offensive pressure and despite being unable to capitalize on three penalty corner chances found themselves up 4-0 in the 36
th minute. A nice passing play allowed Vikes midfielder
Mei Lin Cheung to attack the top of the circle with no pressure. Cheung found Kurianowicz on the baseline who one-timed it across to an open Cole. The Mount Douglas Secondary grad redirected the ball past Frisch for her first of the season.
Â
Following a collision between Frisch and Vikes fourth year
Rosie Beale, the Calgary keeper was unable to resume play in the second half. Rookie midfielder Emma Thunnissen was forced to suit up quickly during the break and fill in for Frisch between the pipes.
Â
The Dinos didn't seem rocked by the absence of their national team keeper and fifth year leader. The Dinos spent the better part of the opening 10 minutes of the second half in the Vikes' end. Dino Janelle Rice had an unpressured chance at close range but the fourth year's shot went wide left.
Â
Calgary continued to play well, generating several opportunities to attack the Vikes' circle. Unfortunately the Dinos were unable to generate any scoring chances despite showing their abilities to put the experienced Vikes under pressure in their back end.
Â
Thunnissen did well in goal for Calgary making three great saves to keep the Vikes off the board the entire second half. Victoria's opening four goals stood though and the Vikes wrapped their regular season with a 4-0 win and take the crown of Canada West champions.
Â
Following the game Victoria's
Kathleen Leahy,
Annie Walters-Shumka,
Lizzie Yates and Kurianowicz were named Canada West all stars for 2015. Calgary's Jessica Britton, Rice and Frisch were also named to the list. Vikes bench boss Beecroft named the Canada West Coach of the Year for the second-straight season and Leahy was awarded the Gail Wilson Award as the most outstanding contributor. Calgary's Frisch was named the Goalkeeper of the Year for the second-straight season and Dino Sabrina Wong was the conference's Rookie of the Year.
