Tomie on top as Vikes women climb leader board at Canadian Championship

May 26-29: Canadian University/College Golf Championship (Guelph, Ont.)

VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's golf team continued their climb up the leader board at the 2015 Canadian University/College Championship hosted May 26-29 at Cutten Fields in Guelph, Ont. Entering the fourth and final round fifth-year Vike Brynn Tomie found herself on top, tied with Montreal's Caroline Ciot, for first place with a 12-over par, 225. The Vikes women shot their lowest round, 228, on Day 3 to sit in third spot just four strokes back of first place Montreal.

"It was a very successful day for the women this morning," said a happy Vikes head coach Justin Clews following Day 3 performances. "Conditions were very scorable this morning and the women played some very solid golf. All four Vikes shot below 80, shooting a very respectable (+15) team score. The girls got off to a good start and were able to coast in with great scores. Pin placements were tricky today but the wind was down leading to solid scoring."

Rookie Vike Brianna Carrels shot her lowest score of the tournament with a 75 to jump to sixth spot, tied with two others, at 20-over, 233. Vike Michaela Abey also shot her lowest round, 78, to sit 22nd with 33-over par, 246, while Laura Ferreira finished the day in 25th spot and 356-over par (85-85-69--249).

"Brynn's 75 today propelled her into a tie for first heading into tomorrow's final round," added Clews. "The Vikes are only four shots back and should make for an exciting final round tomorrow. All the hard work from this year is paying off and now they have a legitimate chance to take home the title tomorrow. It should be a fun day! The girls are beyond excited for this opportunity!"

In team standings, the Montréal Carabins overtook the Toronto Varsity Blues after starting the third round in second spot. The Varsity Blues reversed positions with the Carabins and now sit one shot back of the leaders after a round of 229. Ana Peric of Etobicoke, Ont., shot a women's side day-low score of two over par in a valiant attempt to keep her Toronto side close to the leaders. The UBC Thunderbirds shot 226 in their third round and have fallen to fourth place but only three strokes back of the Vikes.

Tomie continued her push up the leaderboard with a score of 75 to bring her three day total to 225. The Bedford, N.S., native shot five over par to move into a share of the lead with Ciot – who held first place heading into the third round This is familiar territory for the two student-athletes – the pair shared third place going into the final day of the 2013 edition of this competition. Holding third is Alexandra Pelletier whose round of 77 was the team-low score for Université Laval.

The top six women's teams and the top 10 men's teams have made the cut and will go on to the final round. Players within 15 strokes advance to the final round of competition where team and individual honours will be awarded to the 2015 Canadian University/College champions.
