PREVIEW: Playoffs begin early in a pair of must win games for Vikes

Oct. 21-22: Victoria Vikes men's soccer vs. TRU WolfPack & UBCO Heat (Centennial Stadium, Victoria, B.C.)

Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA—The UVic Vikes will be battling to extend their season by at least one more weekend when they host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack and the UBCO Heat on October 21 and 22.

Both contests are scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. start.

Locked in a duel with the WolfPack and the Heat, the Vikes need to win both of these contests and get some help from the other teams in the conference if they are going to sneak into the playoffs.

Sitting six points back of the WolfPack, the Vikes need to not only beat the team from Kamloops and have them lose their other game of the weekend against UBC but they also need to beat them by at least four goals to take the tie-breaker away from TRU.

If the WolfPack pick up a single point on the weekend then they clinch fourth place in the Pacific division and the final playoff spot. The Vikes can afford for the Heat to tie UBC but cannot have the Kelowna team win in Vancouver or pick up any points while they are in Victoria.

"When you start the season with the way our season started and the way that the injuries have piled up for us it's been hard," said Vikes head coach Bruce Wilson.

"Our goal was to make the playoffs and to go into the last weekend with that still being possible I think we've done alright to just hang in there."

The game Saturday night against UBCO will also be the final ones played at home for the three graduating Vikes players. Noah Pawlowski, Adam Ravenhill and Samuel Prette will all step on the Centennial Stadium turf for the last time in their Vikes careers.

The Vikes made the road trip to the interior of the province to face both of these teams in the first weekend of the season.

UBCO beat the Vikes on a goal scored deep into extra time, while the WolfPack defeated the Vikes 4-1.

Last Time Out

It was a whirlwind of a weekend for the Vikes the last time they played. With snow in Prince George rendering the fields unplayable, UVic and UNBC turned around and played the games in Victoria.

The Timberwolves took the first game by a score of 5-2, but the Vikes managed to regroup and beat UNBC 2-1 in the second game to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

Thompson Rivers and UBCO also split their games last weekend. The two teams both picked up wins over Trinity Western while dropping their respective games against Fraser Valley.

By the Numbers

2010: The last year that the Vikes failed to make the playoffs

0: TRU has never made the playoffs in the three years they have competed in Canada West

10: UBCO has scored just ten times through the first 14 games of the season.

Coach's Take
Bruce Wilson, Vikes head coach

"We haven't even really ever had the same starting line up twice due to injuries. We are going to come out this weekend, try to win both games and at least make it interesting."

On the Vikes graduating players

"We are going to miss them for sure because they have been around this program for a number of years. Full credit to them, they have really given us full effort and service in their time here."
