Vikes blanked by Huskies in road trip single header

Sept. 23: Victoria Vikes 0, Saskatchewan Huskies 6

Box Score SASKATOON – Four early second half goals aided the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 6-0 win over the visiting Victoria Vikes on S3pt. 23 in Saskatoon's PotashCorp Park.
 
Saskatchewan's scoring frenzy started in the 16th minute and goals followed in the 35th, 52nd, 59th, 62nd and 66th minutes. Gabriel Buatois scored twice for the Huskies, while rookie Kwame Opoku tallied one goal and an assist.
 
With the win, the Huskies improve to 6-3-0 in Canada West men's soccer, whileVictoria drops to 3-5-1 with the loss.
 
The Huskies jumped on the board in the 16th minute capitalizing on a miscue by Vikes' keeper Jasdeep Lally. Lally was collecting the ball and slipped. Huskie striker Tyler Redl got to the ball first and quickly kicked it into the net.
 
Saskatchewan added the second goal in the 35th minute after a ball was played in from half by Kwame Opoku. Gabriel Buatois was on the receiving end beating Lally to the low left side of the net.
 
The Huskies quickly added to their lead just seven minutes into the second half. After a long rebound from a Tyler Redl shot given up by Evan Libke, Marcello Gonzalez jumped on the ball at the top of the box and slid it into the net in the 52nd minute.
 
After Dorian Colapisis was handed a caution for an infraction in the box, Opoku converted on the penalty kick in the 59th minute for the 4-0 Huskies' lead. Bryce Marinus tallied the fifth goal in the 62nd and Buatois added his second of the game in the 66th.
 
Victoria's best chances to get on the scoreboard came in the second half. The first on a shot by a streaking Mackenzie Rigg but Huskies' keeper Patrick Pranger was able to make a diving save to his left. The second by Issac Koch who was blocked twice before Pranger was able to cover the ball.
 
Pranger made three saves for his third shutout of the season, while Lally made two saves before exiting for the second half for the Vikes. Libke made one save in his 45 minutes.
 
Saskatchewan outshot the Vikes 11-8. The Vikes had the edge in corner kicks at 12-1.
 
The Huskies remain at home to host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack Sunday, while the Vikes return home to host the UBC Thunderbirds on Oct. 5.
