VANCOUVER – The University of Victoria Vikes capped off another undefeated weekend winning the second leg of the Canada West Women's Rugby 7s tournament. This marks the second-straight event in which the Vikes went undefeated.
Â
In the semifinals, the team from Victoria defeated the University of Alberta Pandas 17-12 in a back-and-forth affair that saw a late try by
Ashah Payson, with the clock at zero, to seal the win for her team.
Â
"We had some very close games in this tournament. It was great to have all 14 of our athletes be able to get in and perform well," Vikes coach
Brittany Waters said of her squad's effort this weekend.
Â
In the final, the Vikes had a rematch against the host UBC Thunderbirds, who they defeated 14-12 on Saturday. The game on Sunday wasn't as close as two early scores by Victoria gave them a lead they would not relinquish.
Â
"UBC is so great at moving the ball, we knew we needed to be better than we were yesterday," Waters said.
Renee Gonzalez supplied a pair of tries on the day. She now sits tied for eighth in league scoring with 35 points.
Â
The eight teams are back in action on February 29 and March 1, as the University of Victoria plays host to the final leg of the Canada West Women's Rugby 7s series.
Â
The Vikes, with a maximum 30 points, lead Alberta in the series standings by eight heading into the final weekend of play. UBC is third with 20 points, while Lethbridge is two back with 18, followed by Calgary (12), Trinity Western (8), Fraser Valley (4) and UBC Okanagan (2).
