Vikes drop overtime heatbreaker to Gee-Gees, will play for bronze at U SPORTS Championships

Kingston, Ont. – A penalty goal in the final minute of the double overtime period proved to be the difference, as the University of Victoria women's rugby team fell to the University of Ottawa, 17-14, in the championship semifinal, Nov. 12. The Vikes will now play for bronze Sunday, Nov. 14.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
6th Minute – Ottawa 3, UVic 0
  • A penalty goal opened the game scoring, putting the Gee-Gees on the board first.
9th Minute – UVic 3, Ottawa 3
  • Alexie Pusch would tie the game with a successful penalty goal kick of her own.
19th Minute – Ottawa 8, UVic 3
  • Stopping the first three consecutive attempts by the Gee-Gees, Ottawa was able to get through and score the first try of the match.
23rd Minute – UVic 8, Ottawa 8
  • Awarded a penalty, the Vikes went for the try, first swinging the ball out. After a stop, the Vikes' forward pack pushed Avery Champion over the line, who touched it down to tie the match.
29th Minute – Ottawa 11, UVic 8
  • Taking the lead back, an Ottawa penalty goal gave the Gee-Gees a three-point advantage going in to halftime.
46th Minute – UVic 11, Ottawa 11
  • The Vikes opened the second-half scoring, with Pusch with sending the ball through the uprights for a penalty goal.  
52nd Minute – Ottawa 14, UVic 11
  • Regaining the lead, the Gee-Gees would score on a successful penalty goal. 
63rd Minute – UVic 14, Ottawa 14
  • Like the last scoring sequence, Pusch would tie the match on her third penalty goal score of the day, a score which would hold and send the two sides to overtime. 
OVERTIME
90th Minute – Ottawa 17, UVic 14
  • After a scoreless 19 minutes of overtime play, Ottawa scored as they have most of the match, with a penalty goal to seal the win in the final minute of overtime play.
WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes have secured their best finish at the U SPORTS championships with their appearance in the championship semifinal, with their previous best finish being fifth.
  • Pusch delivered nine of Victoria's 14 points in the match, going three-for-three on penalty goal attempts.
  • Champion delivered her first try of the season to tie the game for the Vikes.
  • UVic never held the lead during the contest, but were able to respond nearly every time to stay tied or in striking distance of Ottawa.
UP NEXT
The Vikes will play the loser of the Queen's vs. Laval Sunday, Nov. 14 at 9:30 a.m. PT for the bronze medal.
