Top 10 showdown set to take place at Wallace Field

VICTORIA – The No. 10-ranked University of Victoria Vikes will host the No. 8-ranked University of Calgary for the 11th annual Jenny Vincent Memorial Game at Wallace Field, Sept. 30.

  • The team requests that you show support, observance and recognition around the importance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by wearing orange to the game.
Admission: Donations are being accepted at the gate, with all proceeds benefiting:
  • Howlers Rugby Award – funding to support Canadian Indigenous student-athletes at UVic; and
  • Thunder Rugby – supporting Indigenous rugby programs and communities on Vancouver Island.
 NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
  • Sept. 30, 2021 will be the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.
  • Also known as Orange Shirt Day, it is a national movement that brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the spirit of hope and reconciliation, and honours former residential school students, their families and communities.
ABOUT JENNY VINCENT
  • A pioneer in women's rugby, Jenny Vincent made a lasting impact on both the Victoria and Calgary women's rugby.
  • As a player, Vincent was selected to the 1987 Canada Senior National Rugby Team, the first national rugby team Rugby Canada put on the pitch.
  • Leading the Vikes in its inaugural season of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (now U SPORTS) rugby play, Vincent led the program in its inaugural season, while also graduating from UVic with a master's degree in 1994.
  • Also making an impact on the Dinos' program, Vincent elevated the Calgary squad from club to varsity status and guided them through their first season of Canada West play in 2008.
FAST FACTS
  • In the Sept. 28 Top 10 rankings released by U SPORTS, the Vikes made their way into the rankings at No. 10. After a setback to UBC, Sept. 19, the Vikes shutout Alberta, 37-0, Sept. 26.
  • Calgary, who holds a 1-0 record entering the match after a 12-6 win over Lethbridge, holds the No. 8 spot on the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings this week.
  • Both teams were previously unranked by U SPORTS in previous polls this season.
  • The Dinos lead the all-time Jenny Vincent series, 8-2. The Vikes won the inaugural matchup and the most recent edition in 2019.
  • In the 2019 matchup between the two sides, the Vikes held on to claim the 18-17 victory over the Dinos.
