Women's Rugby 7s ready to kick off season in Edmonton

Edmonton, Alta. – The University of Victoria women's rugby program will set out to claim its fourth-straight Canada West Championship banner as the Vikes kick off the 2022 Canada West Rugby 7s series at the University of Alberta, Jan. 22-23.

Saturday – 9:56 a.m. vs. Trinity Western; 12:52 p.m. vs. Lethbridge; 3:26 p.m. vs. UBC
Sunday – 9:12 a.m. vs. Alberta; 11:46 a.m. vs. Calgary; Medal Rounds beginning at 1:36 p.m.
Location: The Dome at Foote Field – University of Alberta
No spectators will be admitted at the event.

NEWS & NOTES
  • The weekend series marks the first 7s tournament of the season, as well as the start of the fifth Canada West Rugby 7s season.
  • Victoria enters the weekend as the three-time defending conference champions, capturing the Canada West crown in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Calgary won the inaugural 7s season in 2017.
  • UVic has won the Edmonton leg of the Canada West 7s series in three of the last four seasons, coming away from the 2020 edition with a perfect 5-0 record to lead the field after the first weekend of competition.
  • Last on the pitch for 7s play in 2020, current Vike Renee Gonzalez finished the season with 50 points, a figure which ranked tied for ninth in the conference, while her 10 tries tied for fifth in the league. Teammate Brooke Bazian's seven converts ranked 10th in Canada West play in 2020.
  • UVic first-year Krista Scurfield has been selected as an RBC Training Ground athlete. She is one of 30 athletes from across Canada selected to receive RBC Future Olympian funding.

Canada West 7's action will take place at Wallace Field, as UVic hosts the second conference Rugby 7's stop Feb. 12-13.
