Edmonton, Alta. - The second-seeded University of Victoria women's rugby team defeated the third seed University of Calgary Dinos, 34-8, in the Canada West semifinals to punch their ticket to the championship final, Oct. 20 at Foote Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half - UVic 12, CGY 5
- The Dinos found the end zone first, taking a 5-0 lead via try in the ninth minute.Â
- Forcing a Calgary turnover, a quick pass to Carissa Norsten allowed the first-year to make a 35-yard run to touch it down and tie the game in the 25th minute. A successful convert from Alexie Pusch gave the Vikes their first lead of the game, 7-5.
- Swinging the ball out to the backs on the left side, the ball reached Ella O'Regan, who got it across the line for the 12-5 Vikes lead in the 32nd minute.
Second Half - UVic 34, CGY 8
- The opening possession for the Vikes in the second half saw Zoe Williams rush up from behind, catching the pass on the move and diving in to the end zone for the 17-5 Vikes lead in the 41st minute.
- A 55th minute penalty goal from the Calgary brought the score to 17-8, still in favour of UVic.
- A Pusch chip kick from the 10-yard line landed in the hands of Krissy Scurfield in the end zone, registering the the try in the 58th minute to make it 22-8 for Victoria.
- The Vikes' show-and-go from 10 yards out resulted in Regan Casey getting over the line for the try. A successful convert from Kira Peary put the Vikes ahead, 29-8, in the 67th minute.
- Closing the out the game with an interception for the second-straight match, Summer Blackmore intercepted the ball and ran it 65 yards down field, offloading the ball to Lucie Romeo who finished the breakaway play in the end zone with a try, sealing the Vikes' win at 34-8 in the 79th minute.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes will make an appearance in the Canada West final for the second-straight season, and sixth time in seven seasons under head coach Brittany Waters.
- Victoria registered six different try-scorers and eight different point scorers in the win.
- Casey, O'Regan and Williams each notched their first tries of the season in the win.
- Vikes improve to 4-1-1 on the season, while Calgary moves to 3-4 in 2022.
