Edmonton, Alta. – The University of Victoria women's rugby team captured silver at the Canada West Championships, falling in the championship match to the University of British Columbia, 24-12, Oct. 23 at Foote Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half – UBC 14, UVic 0
- UBC controlled the first half, scoring in the 15th and 31st minutes to take a 14-0 lead at the half.
Second Half – UBC 24, UVic 12
- The Vikes put the first points on the board in the second half, beginning with a run from Ella O'Regan to get UVic within two yards of the end zone. A couple pack pushes later, Zoe Williams touched the ball down for the try in the 46th minute to make the score 14-5, with the Thunderbirds still in the lead.
- 60th and 70th minute tries by UBC added 10 points to their lead, making it 24-5 for the No. 1 seed with 10 minutes to play.
- A pass out to Lucie Romeo on the left side gave the first-year room to run, scoring the try in the 74th minute. A successful convert from Alexie Pusch brought the final score to 24-12 in favour of UBC.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes repeat as Canada West runner-ups, and earn the silver medal for the fifth time under head coach Brittany Waters.
- Romeo notched her eighth try of the season in the championship final, a figure which leads the Vikes.
- Williams' try marked her second of the season as well as second in as many matches.
- The Vikes hold a 4-2-1 record after regular season and Canada West postseason play.
