Last-minute penalty goal pushes Gaels past Vikes

VICTORIA – The eighth-seeded University of Victoria women's rugby team fought top-seeded Queen's University to the end, but the Gaels ultimately came away with the 13-10 win, Nov. 2 at Centennial Stadium in the U SPORTS championship quarterfinals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
  • Queen's put the first points on the board, scoring via penalty goal in the 14th minute.
  • Getting the Vikes in front, the ball was swung out to Lucie Romeo, who accelerated as she passed the centre line to touch it down in the left side of the end zone for the 5-3 UVic lead in the 24th minute, which the Vikes would hold until the half.
Second Half
  • The Gaels found the end zone in the 48th minute, returning a blocked kick for the 10-5 lead.
  • Getting close near the try line, the Vikes once again found Romeo on the left side, getting the rookie her second try of the day in the 64th minute to tie the game, 10-10.
  • With no time left on the clock, Queen's elected to kick on an awarded penalty, scoring the goal to seal their win, 13-10.
WORTH NOTING
  • Romeo's tries marked her ninth and 10th of the season.
  • The 10 points marked the Vikes' lowest-scoring game this season.
  • The Vikes move to 4-3-1 overall on the season, while Queen's remains undefeated at 9-0 with the win.
UP NEXT
The Vikes will face the University of Prince Edward Island Friday, November 4 at 3 p.m. on Wallace Field in the consolation semifinal.
