Vikes down Panthers, will compete for fifth place at U SPORTS Championships

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's rugby team bounced the University of Prince Edward Island, 20-5, in the consolation semifinal of the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championships, Nov. 4 at Wallace Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
  • Turning on the jets, Lucie Romeo rocketed up the left side of the field to give the Vikes a 5-0 lead in the 10th minute.
  • Scooping the ball from the ground, Carissa Norsten returned it to the end zone for the try and 10-0 Vikes lead in the 15th minute.
  • Adding her second of the day, Romeo scored in similar fashion to her first, breaking away from defenders to give UVic the 15-0 lead in the 30th minute with a try.
  • UPEI found the scoreboard in the final minute of the first half, bringing the score to 15-5 in favour of the Vikes after 35 minutes of play.
Second Half
  • Swinging the ball out to Ella O'Regan, she found space and slid in to the end zone to touch it down for the Vikes' final try of the day, sealing the 20-5 win for the Vikes.
WORTH NOTING
  • Romeo has recorded two tries in each of her last two matches, now sitting at 12 on the season.
  • Norsten was named the U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, Nov. 3, ahead of entering the game, and secured her fifth try of the year in the win.
  • O'Regan's try marked her second of the season.
  • The Vikes move to 5-3-1 on the season, while UPEI ends their year at 4-4 overall.

The Vikes will face the University of British Columbia in the fifth place game Sunday, Nov, 6 at Centennial Stadium.
