Vikes finish sixth at U SPORTS Rugby Championships

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's rugby team finished in sixth place at the 2022 U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championships, falling to UBC, 20-15, Nov. 6 on the final day of action.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
  • The Thunderbirds were the first on the scoreboard, tallying two tries and a convert to take a 12-0 lead 20 minutes in.
  • Barreling through UBC defenders, Summer Blackmore covered the distance to the end zone to touch the ball down and put the Vikes on the board, making it a 12-5 game in the 29th minute.
Second Half
  • Closing the gap further, Lucie Romeo notched her first try of the game with a breakaway down the left side of the field, bringing the score to 12-10 for UBC in the 49th minute.
  • A 75th minute penalty goal by UBC extended the visitor's lead to 15-10.
  • Two minutes later, after being stopped several times on forward pack push attempts, the Vikes found Romeo who was able to cover the short remaining distance to get the ball over the line for the game-tying try, 15-15.
  • The Thunderbirds scored in the final seconds of play to win the game, 20-15.
WORTH NOTING
  • Romeo scored two tries in each of the three U SPORTS championship contests for the Vikes, finishing the season with 14 total.
  • Blackmore's score marked her first of the tournament and fourth of the season.
  • The Vikes finish the 2022 season with a 5-4-1 overall record.
