Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's rugby team fell to the University of British Columbia, 45-24, in its season-opener at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre, Sept. 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Half – UBC 19, UVic 14
- The Thunderbirds came out strong out of the gate, scoring the first three tries of the contest. Adding two converts, UBC took a 19-0 lead 21 minutes in.
- The Vikes would respond in the 24th minute, with Chloe Hill Huse touching the ball down between the posts and Elena Stalwick adding two points on the convert to cut UBC's lead to 19-7.
- A push from the Vikes' pack propelled Emerald Maze over the line in the 31st minute for the Vikes' second try of the afternoon. Kira Peary made her first convert of the season to pull the Vikes within five, 19-14, at the half.
2nd Half – UBC 45, UVic 24
- UBC scored the first three tries to open the second half, taking a 38-14 lead 63 minutes in.
- Madison Jumeau put a stop to the Thunderbirds' scoring run, recording her first try of the season in the 67th minute to make the score 38-19 for UBC.
- UBC added a final try and convert in the 71st minute, bringing the score to 45-19 for the home side.
- The Vikes put the final points of the game on the board, coming by way of a try from Shaye Ogurek in the 74th minute to bring the final score to 45-24 in favour of the Thunderbirds.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes saw six different student-athletes contribute points in the season-opener, with four different try scorers and two convert scorers.
- UVic has lost its last two season-openers to UBC, falling to the Thunderbirds in 2021's debut match, 31-15.
- Victoria starts the season 0-1, while UBC grabs a 1-0 record after one match.

The Vikes will make their 2022 debut at Wallace Field next Sunday, Sept. 18 against the University of Calgary. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
