Vikes take down Dinos to win third-straight Jenny Vincent Memorial Game

VICTORIA – Claiming the program's third-straight Jenny Vincent Memorial Game title, the University of Victoria women's rugby team defeated the University of Calgary, 42-12, Sept. 18 at Wallace Field.

ABOUT JENNY VINCENT
  • A pioneer in women's rugby, Jenny Vincent guided UVic through its inaugural season of CIS (now U SPORTS) play.
  • Relocating to Calgary, Vincent worked tirelessly to elevate the Dinos' club rugby team to a varsity one, and led Calgary through its first season of Canada West play in 2008.
  • The Jenny Vincent Memorial Game was started in 2010 between the University of Victoria and University of Calgary to honour her contributions to the two programs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
  • Winning a scrum in the early minutes of the contest, the Vikes swung the ball out to Lucie Romeo, who touched it down to give the Vikes the lead in the second minute. A convert from Alexie Pusch made the score 7-0.
  • A fumbled ball from Calgary was knocked away by Carissa Norsten, who returned it from 20 yards out for the try. Kira Peary sent the ball through the uprights for the 14-0 Vikes lead in the 22nd minute.
  • Adding one final try before the end of the first half, Romeo took a long run down the left side of the field to score her second try of the match. Pusch added a convert for the 21-0 Vikes lead in the 29th minute.
Second Half
  • Calgary opened the second-half scoring, using a quick restart just a few yards shy of the goal line to catch the Vikes off guard and sneak in for the try. Adding a convert, the Dinos cut the Vikes' lead to 21-7 in the 52nd minute.
  • A run from Romeo marched the Vikes down field to the Dinos' goal line. After being stopped, a quick series of passes out to Norsten on the left side allowed the winger to score her second try of the afternoon. A successful convert from Pusch pushed the Vikes' lead to 28-7 in the 65th minute.
  • A pack push by the Vikes allowed ball-carrier Sarah McWhinney to get the ball down in the end zone for her first career try. Adding two points from Peary, UVic took a 35-7 lead in the 69th minute.
  • Coming out of a scrum, the Dinos sent the ball right, finding a gap and scoring their final try of the day in the 74th minute, bringing the score to 35-12 in favour of the Vikes.
  • Morgan Davidson pushed through a wall of Dinos defenders between the posts in the 80th minute to register the final try of the afternoon. With one final convert from Peary, the Vikes sealed the win, 42-12.
WORTH NOTING
  • With the win, the Vikes have now won three-straight Jenny Vincent Memorial games, dating back to the 2019 season.
  • Romeo and Norsten each finished with two tries in the win, while Davidson and McWhinney both added one. All four try-scorers recorded their firsts of the season.
  • Pusch and Peary each tallied three converts, bringing both their totals to four on the season.
  • UVic sits at 1-1 after the win, while Calgary is now 1-2 in Canada West play.
  • The Vikes have now won the last three meetings in 15s play against the Dinos, and hold a 3-2 mark in the last five matchups.
