VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's rugby team dominated the Lethbridge Pronghorns, 53-5, to capture its second-straight win, Sept. 22 at Wallace Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
- A penalty goal from Kira Peary gave the Vikes the lead in the ninth minute.
- Two minutes later, Carissa Norsten would split through Lethbridge defenders and sprint up the right side of the field, touching the ball down close to centre for the first try of the match. Peary would add two points via convert for the 10-0 Vikes lead.
- A pack push with the ball in the hands of Chloe Hill Huse added five points to the Vikes' lead in the 31st minute, giving UVic the 15-0 advantage at the half.
Second Half
- A couple quick passes got the ball to Peary, who found the end zone in the 43rd minute for the try, giving Victoria a 20-0 lead.
- Finding Emerald Maze with space, the fourth-year powered past Pronghorn defenders for the try. Peary would kick her second successful convert of the day to put the Vikes up 27-0 in the 47th minute.
- A series of passes after a restart got the ball to Marina Skakun, who got the ball over the line for the try. Adding a convert from Peary, the Vikes found themselves with a 34-0 lead 56 minutes in.
- Finding open space, Lucie Romeo darted up the left side, crossing the try line and making her way over to centre to touch it down. Alexie Pusch would make her first convert of the day for the 41-0 Vikes advantage with 20 minutes to play.
- The Pronghorns would get on the board in the 70th minute, winning a scrum just in front of the goal line. Finding a gap in the Vikes' coverage to get it across the line, the Pronghorns cut the lead to 41-5 with the try.
- After a few pack push attempts by the Vikes were stopped by Lethbridge, the ball was sent to Brittany Gardiner on the left side to get it over the line and touch it down for the try. Two points from Pusch on the convert brought the score to 48-5 in the 75th minute.
- Adding one final try before the final whistle, Kaleigh Bellows escaped Lethbridge defenders to make a dash into the end zone in the 78th minute, sealing the Vikes' victory at 53-5.
