EDMONTON – The University of Victoria women's rugby team captured third place at the Edmonton 7s stop, hosted by the University of Alberta, Jan. 21-22 at Foote Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Day 1
Victoria 45, Regina 5
- Regina would be the first team to put points on the board, taking a 5-0 lead with a try in the first half.
- Quinn Murphy pulled the Vikes even with a try, 5-5.
- Back-to-back tries by Kira Peary, followed by a successful convert from Alexie Pusch and a second convert from Peary, put the Vikes ahead 19-5.
- Adding one more score before the half, a Maelle Reed try and Peary convert gave the Vikes a 26-5 lead.
- Mariam Ibrahim, Olivia Newsome, and Gwynnie Fry each added a try in the second half while Pusch and Newsome recorded successful converts to power the Vikes to a 45-5 win.
Victoria 36, Lethbridge 0
Calgary 19, Victoria 12
- Calgary took the early 5-0 lead in the game before a try from Carissa Norsten and convert from Kira Peary put the Vikes in front, 7-5.
- A try and convert by the Dinos gave Calgary the 12-7 lead heading in to the half.
- Peary brought the score to 12-12 with a try in the second half.
- Calgary scored the final points of the game to take the 19-12 win.
Day 2
UBC 26, Victoria 7
- UBC controlled the first half of play, holding a 19-0 lead at the half.
- Maelle Reed put the Vikes on the board with a try to open the second-half scoring. Adding a convert from Alexie Pusch, the Vikes trailed the Thunderbirds, 19-7.
- UBC added one more score before time expired to claim the win, 26-7.
3rd Place Match: Victoria 28, Alberta 5
- The Vikes struck first against the Pandas, with tries from Carissa Norsten and Emerald Maze and two converts from Kira Peary giving Victoria the 14-0 lead at the half.
- Peary registered the next 14 points for the Vikes by way of two tries and two converts, doubling UVic's lead to 28-0 in the second half.
- Alberta scored the final try of the match, however, the Vikes captured the bronze medal with the 28-5 victory.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes hold a 3-2 record after the first tournament of the season.
- Peary led the Vikes with six tries over the tournament, while a total of 10 Vikes registered tries in the bronze medal effort.
- Peary also led the Vikes with a total of 48 points over five matches, coming by way of six tries and nine converts.

The Vikes host the second leg of the Canada West 7s series, Feb. 11-12 at Wallace Field.

Teams are awarded 15 points for a tournament win, 12 points for finishing 2nd, 10 points for finishing third, 8 points for finishing fourth, 6 points for finishing fifth, 4 points for finishing sixth, 2 points for finishing seventh, and 1 point for finishing eighth.
The University of Alberta (January 20/21) Victoria (February 11/12) and British Columbia (March 4/5) will host the three Rugby 7s tournaments in 2023.
