Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's rugby team closed the 2023 Canada West campaign with a 29-7 loss to the University of British Columbia, Oct. 14 at the Gerald McGavin Rugby Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes' defence was on display in the first half, highlighted in the 23rd minute by Lucie Romeo, who caught up to a Thunderbird on a breakaway to make the tackle and dislodge the ball just two metres shy of the try line to keep the game scoreless.
- UBC broke the 0-0 score line with less than a minute to play in the first half, using a try to take a 5-0 lead into the break. The 'Birds would double their lead in the 45th minute to go up 10-0.
- Maggie MacKinnon put the Vikes on the board in the 49th minute, finding space to avoid UBC defenders and touch the ball down between the posts. MacKinnon was successful on her subsequent convert attempt to pull the Vikes within three, 10-7.
- UBC would score tries in the 57th, 65th, and 80th minutes and make two converts on those scores to bring the final score to 29-7 for the home side.
WORTH NOTING
- MacKinnon scored her third try and 15th convert of the season, and now leads the Vikes with 45 points on the year.
- The Vikes end the 2023 Canada West season with a record of 3-2, while UBC finishes with an undefeated 5-0 record.
