Field hockey captures fifth-straight U SPORTS title

Toronto, Ont. – The University of Victoria field hockey team captured its fifth-straight and 16th overall U SPORTS national championship title with a 3-0 win over the University of Toronto in game three, Nov. 5 at Back Campus Fields.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Less than two minutes in, Amanda Adams scored for the Vikes to put Victoria ahead, 1-0.
  • On a corner opportunity in the third minute, Julia Boraston used a big strike to double the Vikes' lead, 2-0.
  • Madeline Mittelsteadt passed the ball across to Josie Dunham, who got it around her defender and into the net to seal the Vikes' win, 3-0, in the  27th minute.
  • Holding a 3-0 halftime lead, the Vikes kept the Varsity Blues scoreless for the remaining 30 minutes to win the national title.
WORTH NOTING
  • Dunham's goal marked her second in as many games, scoring the game-winner in game two one day ago.
  • Adams' goal marked her third of the year, while Boraston scored her first of the season for the Vikes in the win.
  • Anais Chace and the Vikes' defence posted two-straight shutouts to lead the Vikes to the national title.
  • Libby Hogg was named the U SPORTS Championship MVP, Anni Kleinschmidt received the R.W. Fair Play Award for outstanding sportsmanship, and Boraston collected player of the game honours following game three.
  • The U SPORTS title is the fifth-straight for the Vikes and 16th overall for the program.
  • While part of eight previous national titles as an assistant coach, the 2023 championship marked the first for the Vikes under first-year head coach Krista Thompson.
  • The Vikes end the year with a record of 6-2-3.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH KRISTA THOMPSON
"We talked today in our team meeting before the game about taking care of the little things and I think our players went out there and they did that quite early. We never really talked about winning. We always talk about the process and the details, and in order to have the end result like we did today you have to take care of all those little things. I would say they saved their best game for this last game and I am incredibly proud of this young group of athletes."
