Vikes take second at Victoria 7s stop

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's rugby team captured second place at the Victoria stop of the Canada West 7s series, Feb. 11-12 at Wallace Field.
 
Day 1
Victoria 33, Lethbridge 7
  • Back-to-back tries by Maelle Reed and a convert by Alexie Pusch gave the Vikes a 12-0 lead over the Pronghorns in the first half.
  • A try from Ella O'Regan and convert from Kira Peary put the Vikes ahead, 19-0, at the half.
  • Tries from Mariam Ibrahim and Carissa Norsten with converts by Summer Blackmore and Peary put the final Vikes points of the game on the board, bringing UVic's lead to 33-0.
  • Lethbridge scored a try and convert to make the final score 33-7 in favour of UVic.
Calgary 7, Victoria 24
  • Madison Jumeau put the Vikes on the board with a try, but Calgary would respond with a try and convert to take a 7-5 lead.
  • A try by Summer Blackmore and convert from Alexie Pusch, followed by a try by Kira Peary put the Vikes ahead 17-7 at the half.
  • Carissa Norsten's try and Peary's convert in the second half finalized the score at 24-7 for the Vikes. 
Victoria 29, Trinity Western 14
  • Trinity Western put the first points on the board with a try and convert, but Kira Peary responded with a try for the Vikes to make the score 7-5 for TWU.
  • Tries from Emmie Pierce and Maelle Reed in addition to a convert by Peary gave the Vikes a 17-7 lead at the half.
  • The Vikes opened the second-half scoring with Madison Jumeau recording the try, but the Spartans responded with a try and convert to make the score 22-14 with the Vikes still in front.
  • A final try from Carissa Norsten and convert by Olivia Newsome sealed the 29-14 win for Victoria.
Day 2
Victoria 5, UBC 14
  • The Thunderbirds were first on the board, taking a 7-0 lead before a try from Carissa Norsten made it a two-point game, 7-5, at the half.
  • UBC scored a try and convert in the second half to take the 14-5 win.
Victoria 45, Alberta 0
  • 14-straight points from Kira Peary on two tries and two converts gave the Vikes a 14-0 lead in the first half.
  • Olivia Newsome's first try of the weekend gave Victoria a 19-0 lead at the half.
  • Two tries from Carissa Norsten, one from Summer Blackmore, and one from Maelle Reed, along with three Peary converts marked the second-half scoring for the Vikes, giving UVic a 45-0 win to end the tournament.  
WORTH NOTING
  • Carissa Norsten led the Vikes with six tries in five matches, while Kira Peary led the Vikes in converts with nine.
  • Peary led the Vikes in points with 38, coming via four tries and nine converts.
  • 10 Vikes recorded points over the tournament, with nine Vikes combining for UVic's 22 tries.
  • The Vikes sit at 7-3 on the 7s season after two tournaments.
