Vancouver, B.C. - The University of Victoria women's rugby team recorded a 4-1 record at the Vancouver leg of the Canada West 7s series, claiming a second-place overall finish in conference play, March 3-4 at Thunderbird Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Day 1
Victoria 35, UBC-2 0
- Two tries from Summer Blackmore, two tries from Carissa Norsten, and four successful converts by Kira Peary put the Vikes ahead, 28-0, after the first half of play.
- A try and convert from Peary in the second half sealed the win for the Vikes, 35-0.
Victoria 42, Trinity Western 7
- The Spartans put the first points on the board, taking a 7-0 lead with a try and convert.
- Three unanswered tries from Carissa Norsten, Maelle Reed, and Kira Peary, along with three Peary converts, gave the Vikes the 21-7 lead at the half.
- Olivia Newsome and Maggie MacKinnon registered their first tries of the tournament in the second half, adding four points from two successful converts by Alexie Pusch to put the Vikes ahead, 35-7.
- A final try from Justine Blatt-Janmatt, along with a Summer Blackmore convert, finalized the win for the Vikes by a score of 42-7.
Victoria 29, Calgary 7
- Maggie MacKinnonn put the Vikes on the board, giving UVic a 5-0 lead two minutes in.
- A try and convert by Kira Peary along with a Carissa Norsten try and Summer Blackmore convert gave the Vikes a 19-0 lead after the first half of play.
- A second Norsten try and Peary's second try of the match capped the Vikes' point-scoring for the day, 29-0.
- A try from Calgary in the final minute brought the final score to 29-7 in favour of Victoria.
Day 2
Semifinal 2: Victoria 31, Alberta 10
- Justine Blatt-Janmaat and Carissa Norsten put the Vikes on the board with tries. Adding a Summer Blackmore convert, the Vikes took a 12-0 lead over the Pandas.
- A try from Emerald Maze and seven points on a try and convert by Alexie Pusch cushioned the Vikes' lead to 24-0 at the half.
- The Pandas opened the second-half scoring with a try, but a Blatt-Janmaat try and Kira Peary convert kept the Vikes ahead, 31-5.
- One final try by the Pandas brought the final score to 31-10 in favour of the Vikes.
Gold Medal Match: UBC 17, Victoria 7
- A Carissa Norsten try and Kira Peary convert put the Vikes on the board first, taking a 7-0 lead over the Thunderbirds.
- UBC would find seven points of its own to send the match into halftime tied, 7-7.
- The Thunderbirds scored 10 unanswered points in the second half to take the win, 17-7.
WORTH NOTING
- UVic's shutout of UBC-2 to open the tournament marked the Vikes' third time shutting out an opponent in 2023.
- Carissa Norsten tallied seven tries over two days, leading not only the Vikes but all players in the tournament.
- Kira Peary tied for most points in the tournament with 42, comprised of four tries and 11 converts.
- With the second-place finish at the tournament, the Vikes finished the 2023 Canada West 7s season as the league's silver medallists.
- The Vikes finish the Canada West 7s season with an overall record of 11-4.
